The Dell PowerEdge 840 server holds up to four (4) 3.5" SAS hard drives or four (4) 3.5" SATA drives in either hot-swappable or cabled configurations.
Installation of hot-swappable hard drives requires a drive cage and backplane as well as a SAS cable to the controller. Onboard RAID 0 or 1 is provided to cabled SATA drives when connected directly to the system board. Enabling SAS or more advanced RAID configurations requires an add-in SAS or SATA controller for respective hard drives if more than two drives are to be used. The system’s drive configuration must consist of only SATA hard drives or only SAS hard drives. Combining SATA and SAS drives is not supported.
If you are looking to purchase replacement or spare drives for an existing RAID configuration, it is usually best practice to match the Dell hard drive part number(s) with your current configuration to guarantee compatibility. Certain substitute part numbers will also work.
