Processors (CPUs) & Heatsinks
Dell PowerEdge 1955 Processors & Heatsinks
Dell manufactured two generations of the PowerEdge 1955 blade server model. The first generation was designed around the Intel Xeon 5000/5100-series dual-core CPUs whereas the second generation added support for the quad-core E5300-series. It is important to understand the differences among the system boards prior to upgrading or replacing processors.
In addition, Dell recommends updating to the most current BIOS revision prior to installation. When adding a second processor to a system, make sure to select an identical CPU with matching spec code (e.g. SL9RX, SLABN, etc). The spec code is engraved on the top of the CPU itself.
Generation I system boards (motherboards) support up to two (2) Intel Xeon 5000/5100 series dual-core processors only. They will NOT support quad-core 5300-series CPUs. Example part numbers for generation I system boards are DF279 and HC513.
Generation II system boards support all Intel Xeon 5000/5100-series CPUs in addition to the E5300-series quad-core processors. The system chassis is usually labeled with a Roman numeral "II" on the newer models. Example part numbers for generation II system boards are CU675 and YW433.
Processor heatsinks will work with all CPUs in either generation.
Unless otherwise noted, all processors have been tested and removed from working servers. Our CPUs are backed by our 90-day parts replacement warranty.
